Which plan do I choose to use for subject recruitment?
FollowUsing Mosio for Subject Recruitment in Research Studies
If you're planning to use Mosio to recruit participants for your research studies via text messaging, this guide will help you understand best practices, compliance requirements, and how to get started.
Important: Get Permission First
You must obtain explicit permission from subjects before texting them about studies. This is both a legal requirement and a best practice that protects your ability to reach participants effectively. Without proper consent, your messages are more likely to be flagged as spam, which can damage your recruitment efforts and potentially lead to your texting number being suspended.
Understanding the Mobile Messaging Landscape
The mobile messaging environment is constantly evolving. Mobile carriers regularly update their policies and filtering systems to protect consumers from unwanted messages. While Mosio stays current with industry best practices and compliance requirements, clients are ultimately responsible for the content they send and how they obtain consent. This is why getting proper permission to text people is so critical—it's your first line of defense against deliverability issues.
Avoiding Spam Filters
To ensure your recruitment messages reach intended participants, follow these best practices:
- Obtain clear, documented opt-in consent before sending any messages
- Use clear, professional language in your messages
- Avoid excessive capitalization, too many emojis, or overly promotional language
- Don't send messages too frequently
- Always include opt-out instructions
- Maintain accurate contact lists and remove opted-out participants promptly
For detailed guidance, review our help center article on avoiding spam filters.
About Texting Numbers
We understand many organizations prefer using a single, consistent texting number for participant communication. While we recognize this preference, we strongly advise against becoming dependent on a single phone number. Issues can arise that may require switching numbers, including carrier restrictions, spam complaints, or technical problems. Having strategic plans in place will help ensure continuity in your recruitment efforts. For example, for medium to large studies, consider looking at them as "campaigns" with their own texting number. The Plus Plan (used for recruitment) comes with up to 30 Projects/Text Lines, so you have some flexibility there.
How to Order Mosio for Recruitment Purposes
To set up Mosio for subject recruitment, follow these steps:
1. Order a Plus Plan for 12 months or longer (view pricing and plans).
2. Add 10 × Additional Outbound Message Buckets to your order
3. In the Comments section, specify: "Will be used for Recruitment"
4. Be prepared to provide opt-in documentation after your order is processed
10DLC Campaign Registration
After placing your order, you'll need to provide information about your opt-in process as part of the 10DLC (10-Digit Long Code) campaign registration required by mobile carriers. This registration helps carriers understand the nature of your messaging and improves deliverability.
You should be ready to share:
- How subjects will opt in to receive recruitment messages
- What type of consent language you'll use
- How you'll document and store consent
- What subjects can expect to receive
Participant Opt-Out Management
Participants must always have the ability to opt out of receiving messages. Mosio provides built-in opt-out functionality, and you're required to honor these requests promptly.
For information on how opt-outs work in Mosio, see our article on participant opt-out procedures. Mosio can provide you with our guide on adding content to your ICF (Informed Consent Forms), just ask client services.
