Working with External Data Sources and REDCap
FollowMany research teams need to move data between REDCap and external tools — whether that's a text messaging platform like Mosio, a statistical software package, or a spreadsheet. Here's an overview of how data flows in and out of REDCap and how to make it work smoothly.
Common Workflows
- Text messaging platforms → REDCap: Services like Mosio collect participant responses via text message and make that data available for import into REDCap, either through direct integration or CSV export/import.
- REDCap → Statistical software: Export your data in formats optimized for SPSS, SAS, R, or Stata for analysis.
- Spreadsheets ↔ REDCap: Use CSV files to move data between Excel or Google Sheets and REDCap in either direction.
- REDCap → REDCap: Migrating data between projects or instances using the export/import workflow.
Tips for Smooth Data Transfers
- Use the Data Dictionary as your guide. Whether importing or exporting, the Data Dictionary defines your project's field names, types, and coded values. Keep it handy.
- Plan your field names early. If you know you'll be moving data between REDCap and an external tool, align your variable naming conventions from the start.
- Validate before importing. Always review your CSV for formatting issues before uploading. A quick check of column headers, date formats, and coded values can save you time troubleshooting errors.
- Use the API for automation. If you regularly move data between systems, REDCap's API can automate the process. Talk to your REDCap administrator about API access.
